Estimating Switching Costs in the Mobile Telecommunications Industry in the UK∗
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper I estimate the magnitude of switching costs in the UK mobile industry. Using a survey data with individual choices of network operators in two consecutive years I find a presence of very strong average switching costs, which make the majority of consumers reluctant to switch networks. The size of average switching costs differs significantly across networks and the observed switching may be due to heterogeneous switching costs across consumers. The willingness to switch networks depends to some extend on consumer’s characteristics.

Switching costs in vertically related markets*
In the presence of switching costs, firms are often interested in expanding current market shares to exploit their customer base in the future. However, if the product is sold by retailers, manufacturers may face the problem of extracting too much surplus from the retailer. If this happens, then the latter has not an incentive to build a subscriber base. This paper would like to connect two unr...
متن کاملPro-Competition Public Policy in Network Markets with Switching Costs: Evidence from "Mobile Number Portability" in Wireless Telecommunications Industry
Does public policy designed to promote market competition indeed achieve the intended consequence? Using the wireless industry as a testing field, this paper examines this question by focusing on the impact of mobile number portability (MNP) regulation on competition. We first construct a switching-costs model in which market growth rate and initial market structure are two salient industry cha...
متن کاملEstimating Stock Price in Energy Market Including Oil, Gas, and Coal: The Comparison of Linear and Non-Linear Two-State Markov Regime Switching Models
A common method to study the dynamic behavior of macroeconomic variables is using linear time series models; however, they are unable to explain nonlinear behavior of the series. Given the dependency between stock market and derivatives, the behavior of the underlying asset price can be modeled using Markov switching process properties and the economic regime significance. In this paper, a two-...
متن کاملAccess and Mobility Policy Control at the Network Edge
The fifth generation (5G) system architecture is defined as service-based and the core network functions are described as sets of services accessible through application programming interfaces (API). One of the components of 5G is Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) which provides the open access to radio network functions through API. Using the mobile edge API third party analytics applications ...
متن کاملThe Quest for Customer Loyalty.PDF
Creating a loyal installed base is clearly a top priority among mobile phone operators. It is also one of their greatest challenges. Previous research argues that customer switching costs play an important role in the firm’s ability to retain customers and achieve competitive advantage. Research also indicates that in the increasingly networked environment, switching costs are changing in impor...
